Brighton & Hove Albion could be set for a huge boost ahead of tonight's League Cup tie with Swansea City as Tariq Lamptey is pushing to make his first appearance in more than nine months, according to journalist Tom Barclay.

What's the latest news involving Lamptey?

Brighton boss Graham Potter has confirmed Lamptey is in his matchday squad and could feature for the Seagulls as they take on Championship outfit Swansea with a place in the fourth round of the League Cup up for grabs.

It would signal the end of a long road to recovery for the right-back as he has not featured since the goalless draw with Fulham shortly before Christmas.

The 20-year-old was nearing a comeback earlier this year but suffered what proved to be a costly setback in his recovery from a hamstring problem.

Lamptey made the move to Brighton from Premier League rivals Chelsea in January 2020 and went on to become a crucial part of Potter's plans as he racked up 19 appearances for the south-coast club before sustaining the injury.

He returned to contention at the weekend, when he was named among the substitutes for the win over Leicester City but failed to make it off the bench.

What has Tom Barclay said about Lamptey?

Barclay believes Lamptey's return to action will come as a huge boost to Brighton.

The journalist has tipped the full-back to be named in Potter's starting line-up for tonight's League Cup tie at the Amex Stadium.

However, he insists Potter will not take risks with the returning Lamptey and expects him to be withdrawn close to the hour mark.

When asked how important it is for Lamptey to make his long-awaited return, Barclay told GMS: "It's huge. He's brilliant. He's so, so good. I'm very much expecting him to feature against Swansea tonight.

"He will probably start and get 60 minutes - that would be my guess."

Will Lamptey be just as impressive after his injury?

Brighton will be hoping so and, having witnessed his recovery at close quarters, Potter sees no reason why Lamptey will not return to the form he showed before heading onto the treatment table.
