Swansea City still have a lot of work to do to secure their Championship status for another season.
This 2023/24 campaign has been a rather difficult one for the Swans, as changes in managers and key players leaving in the summer meant the club always looked set for a difficult season.
The majority of Swansea’s season has been spent in the bottom half of the league, and it is now the job of Luke Williams to keep the club in the division.
The Welsh side do have a cushion in the relegation zone, but there is still work to be done to make sure it stays like that. It would be expected that once their safety is confirmed, the club will start looking at their plans for the summer, with Williams likely to be keen on putting his own stamp on the squad.
In fact, their transfer business could already be being looked at, as it’s emerged that Brighton & Hove Alion midfielder Marc Leonard is a possible target for the Swans.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Swansea City are among the sides interested in Brighton’s Marc Leonard.
As well as the Swans being interested, Romano also adds that Preston North End and Plymouth Argyle also have the midfielder on their radar.
The 22-year-old is currently on loan at Northampton Town for a second successive season after impressing with the Cobblers in League Two in the last campaign.
It seems that Leonard’s performances for the League One side haven’t gone unnoticed, with all three sides keeping an eye on his situation.
The midfielder is contracted with the Seagulls until the summer of 2025, but the Premier League side does have the option to extend that by another year.
This summer could see Brighton midfielder Marc Leonard make a big decision on what he does next in his career.
As mentioned, the midfielder will only have one year remaining on his contract after this season, with the option of another year. But Leonard may decide that he wants to find a team he can settle down with rather than keep being shipped out on loan by Brighton.
Therefore, the Seagulls could see it as a good time to sell the player, especially after he had another productive loan at Northampton Town.
The 22-year-old has started every single game of Northampton’s in League One this season, with him averaging 90 minutes per game.
Leonard has scored five goals so far, with a goal coming every 683 minutes of football. He is averaging 0.1 goals per game from the 1.2 shots he takes, as per SofaScore.com.
As well as the goals, Leonard has also been big for creativity for the Cobblers, recording six assists. The midfielder has created six big chances for his teammates and has collected 1.6 key passes in the process, thanks to his 82% pass accuracy.
So, it has been another successful stint out on loan for Leonard this season, but it seems interest is now growing in the player, and it could be time he makes a permanent switch.
Leonard has never played in the Championship, but it seems he may be likely to end there this summer, as Swansea, Preston, and Plymouth eye a deal.
All three sides are good options for the player, but it is a move to Swansea that should be looked upon as more intriguing for the midfielder. Joining Swansea would allow him to play under a manager that is very attack-minded, something that would seem to suit Leonard, as he is a midfielder who loves to get forward.
Furthermore, Swansea are a side that predominantly plays possession-based football, something that hasn’t occurred as much this season but will likely be the way Williams wants his side to play going forward.
So, again, it fits into Leonard’s way of playing; as shown by his stats, he is very comfortable on the ball, and he is used to that way from his time with Brighton, as they also like to dominate on the ball.
Joining Preston and Plymouth would also be good for the midfielder, but there is something at Swansea that seems to be more similar to Brighton, and therefore, it could be said that the transition wouldn’t be as difficult.
The 22-year-old looks to be a player that would excel under Williams, as he likes to have midfielders that are capable in both boxes and can also be creative in the middle of the park, something that Leonard definitely is.
