The Seagulls announced the news via a post on their official club website this morning.
Hawkesby joined Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer off the back of winning both the Liberty A-League regular season and championship final in 2022/2023. The Australian Under-23 international has endured a challenging period in England with the player being fielded just once by Brighton & Hove Albion head coach Melissa Phillips.
With Hawkesby facing a real battle to win her place in the team in the second half of the season, she has now secured a return to former club Sydney FC. She is set to begin her third spell with The Sky Blues.
After Hawkesby’s Brighton & Hove Albion departure was announced, head coach Phillips said “Mackenzie has been very good to work with since joining us in the summer, but she has struggled to establish herself in the team.
“It’s an opportunity for Mackenzie to return to Sydney and play at the club she helped win the A-League title earlier this year, so we felt this move was right for all parties.
“On behalf of everyone at the club, I would like to wish her well for the future.”
Brighton & Hove Albion return to action after the winter break with an Adobe Women’s FA Cup fourth round tie at Luton Town on Sunday 14 January 2023.
