Brighton & Hove Albion’s interim head coach Mikey Harris said that his side couldn’t sustain positive spells for long enough to keep battling against a strong Manchester City side at Broadfield Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Seagulls went down 4-1 to The Cityzens in Crawley. It was a game which the visitors dominated from start to finish.

Despite the difficult result, Brighton & Hove Albion’s interim boss Harris highlighted the positives in his team’s character, togetherness and desire to learn leading into the season’s last six games.

When speaking to the media after the match, Harris said “Credit to the players, I thought they kept going right until the end and you see that with the goal that we score. However, we didn’t make the most of our good moments today and Manchester City did with theirs.

“We stick together always; their character, their attitude, their desire to learn is brilliant. I love working with them, so that’s what we’ve got to keep doing and we look towards our staff.”

Last week, Brighton & Hove Albion were knocked out of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup by Manchester United at the quarter-final stage. Harris saw improvements in the performance against Manchester City.

He said “I certainly felt that we looked more us today than we did against Manchester United. I think that was the biggest disappointment from last week, that we didn’t look anything like we’ve looked in the past few weeks and how we would want to look in terms of the identity of the football club.

“I felt like we saw it in spells, we had moments with the ball that were good, we had moments without the ball where we won it back in the areas we wanted to win it and we had opportunities to counter but we didn’t quite get the next bit right. Those are the fine margins at this level and particularly when you’re coming up against an opponent as strong as Manchester City.”

Harris brought on 16-year-old defender Grace McEwen for her Barclays Women’s Super League debut, another proud moment for the club’s well-respected academy system.

“I’ve said it and I’ll say it again, we are a club that believes in our academy, both on the girl’s and women’s side and the boy’s and men’s side,” Harris said. “We want to produce our own players, our own homegrown players that know what it means to play for the football club and understand and appreciate the identity.

“I felt like all the finishers impacted the game actually, the players that came on today.”

Brighton & Hove Albion are back in action again on Sunday when they travel to Leicester City.
