Though a loan move to PEC Zwolle has been all but done, there may be another twist to the Kjell Scherpen tale.
According to Dutch outlet Algemeen Dagblad, English Premier League outfit Brighton and Hove Albion are attempting to hijack the 21-year-old’s move by signing the young goalkeeper to a permanent deal.
Scherpen, who is currently Ajax’s third-string option behind the banned André Onana and Maarten Stekelenburg, is determined to get on the pitch this coming season, already having a full Eredivisie season (2018-19) under his belt on loan at FC Emmen.
Though Ajax do not want Scherpen to leave their ranks, the Dutch champions are bringing in long-time Eredivisie veteran Remko Pasveer from Vitesse on a free transfer in July to back up Stekelenburg.
Scherpen, who is still under contract until 2023, only has four career Ajax first-team appearances under his belt, all coming this season after Onana was handed his 12-month suspension.
