With Sébastien Haller away on AFCON duty with Ivory Coast, Brian Brobbey stepped up to the plate for Ajax as he bagged a brace in Sunday’s 3-0 win over Utrecht.
Antony gave the Amsterdam giants an early lead before Brobbey netted twice later in the first half to wrap up the points at the Stadion Galgenwaard.
“We won and I scored two goals. I am a very happy person now,” the 19-year-old said after the game, per club media.
The youngster is back on loan from RB Leizpig, the side he left Ajax for on a free transfer last summer.
Brobbey didn’t take long to make his mark upon his return to action, although his fitness kept him from lasting the full 90 minutes.
“It’s a very nice start,” he said. “Of course, I didn’t play that much at Leipzig: at a certain point the legs are empty.”
The win kept Ajax within one point of Eredivisie leaders PSV.
Brobbey’s scoring exploits will surely lead Ajax boss Erik ten Hag to put faith in the former Netherlands U-17 international again for Thursday’s KNVB Cup round of 16 tie with Excelsior Maassluis.
