Monaco knew a win at the Stade Francis-Le Blé in Niko Kovac’s 50th Ligue 1 Uber Eats game in charge would lift them up into the European places. However, they fell behind in the 18th minute when Romain Faivre’s free-kick delivery from wide on the right was helped on for Mounié to turn it in at the back post.

Despite their struggles Brest had held reigning champions to a 1-1 draw in the far north of France last time out and they doubled their lead here with 11 minutes remaining with a fine goal on the break. Irvin Cardona’s ball across the face of goal from the right was turned in by Franck Honorat and that was 2-0.

It could even have ended with a third goal for the home side, as a Faivre corner landed on the crossbar. It is a first win of the season for Brest and a first win since Michel Der Zakarian was appointed as coach in the summer. They remain in the bottom three though, while Monaco continue to sit in mid-table.

THE PLAYER: Steve Mounié

The Benin international is a quality striker at this level. His goal that set Brest on their way was his 25th in Ligue 1, his 11th for the Brittany side.

THE STAT: 11

This was a first win in 11 home games for Brest since they beat Dijon FCO 3-1 on March 3, almost eight months ago.

Rami scores for Troyes

Elsewhere Stade Rennais FC were thwarted in their quest to make it six wins on the bounce in all competitions as they were held to a 2-2 draw away at ESTAC Troyes. Nayef Aguerd headed Rennes into an early lead at the Stade de l’Aube, but Adil Rami equalised with his first Ligue 1 goal in almost three years and then Tristan Dingomé gave Troyes the lead before the break. In the end Rennes needed a late Martin Terrier leveller to escape with a point.

Montpellier Hérault SC continued their good home form, beating FC Nantes 2-0 to make it six unbeaten at the Stade de la Mosson. The goals came in the second half, with Florent Mollet getting the opener just after the hour mark after Téji Savanier’s shot had been parried by Alban Lafont. Jordan Ferri then released substitute Elye Wahi who ran through to seal the win, and Savanier struck the bar from a free-kick as well late on.

Briand late winner for Bordeaux

Habib Diallo bagged a first-half brace as RC Strasbourg Alsace crushed FC Lorient 4-0 at the Stade de la Meinau. Ludovic Ajorque had given the home side the lead with a looping header before Diallo tapped in to make it 2-0 and the Senegalese striker then fired in from the edge of the area in first-half stoppage time. Adrien Thomasson put the icing on the cake with a close-range finish in the 64th minute.

Girondins de Bordeaux won for just the second time this season as Jimmy Briand’s penalty in the sixth minute of added time saw them beat Stade de Reims 3-2 at the Matmut Atlantique. Hugo Ekitike gave Reims the lead late in the first half and Bradley Locko’s second half lob seemed to have the away side coasting. However Yacine Adli pulled one back and substitute Briand made it 2-2 in the 78th minute. Then, when a Wout Faes handball in the box was penalised following a VAR review, Briand made no mistake from the spot to secure a precious victory for Vladimir Petkovic’s team.
