The Bees’ bid of £16 million is short of Hull City‘s valuation of the player, but with just two years, including the club’s option to extend Lewis-Potter’s deal by a further year next summer, left on his contract at MKM Stadium and a desire to depart from the forward, the transfer saga appears to be nearing its conclusion.

Lewis-Potter stepped up to Championship level brilliantly in 2021/22 and was a driving force in the Tigers stabilising in the second tier under Grant McCann and latterly Shota Arveladze.

West Ham United looked to be the most likely destination for the youngster at one stage, but Brentford’s track record of improving and selling attacking players may have increased their standing in Lewis-Potter’s thought process.

The Bees were desperate to get a deal over the line for Brennan Johnson last season, but the Welshman stayed at Nottingham Forest and helped them seal promotion.

Lewis-Potter is not a like-for-like replacement, but the 21-year-old has some similar attributes and is at a similar stage in his career.

Becoming a regular starter in the Premier League next season is probably a lot to ask at the moment, but the early signs are good that Lewis-Potter has what it takes to adapt and make the step up effectively under Thomas Frank.

WHAT WAS JOHN PRESCOTT FAMOUS FOR?

ACTING POLITICIAN

Player power is far more significant these days than it was in years gone by, and the last thing that Hull want is a demotivated Lewis-Potter to start the season for the club, while his value in the transfer market decreases.

The Tigers conducted some impressive business in the January transfer window, their first under Acun Ilicali’s ownership, and therefore a lot is expected of them this summer.

Tobias Figueiredo was a very smart pick-up on a free transfer this week, but Lewis-Potter will take a lot of replacing and will give an insight into just how smart the recruitment team at the club are.

With £16 million potentially entering the pot, the Tigers will certainly be ones to watch in the remainder of the window.
