Brentford closing in on loan deal for Tottenham’s Sergio Regulión | OneFootball

According to Fabrizio Romano, Brentford are close to reaching an agreement with Tottenham over a six-month loan deal for Sergio Reguilón.

The deal between the two sides is believed to be ‘at the final stages’, and discussions between the player and Brentford will then follow, with the Spain international still yet to make a decision over his future due to interest from several other clubs.

If the move were to go through, Brentford would become Reguilón’s third club already this season, having already spent the first six months of the campaign at Manchester United, who activated a break clause in the initial year-long loan earlier this January – subsequently sending the defender back to Tottenham after he made 12 appearances all competitions for The Red Devils.

Although FIFA regulations state a player can only be eligible to play official matches for two clubs during a season, Reguilón has not appeared for The Lilywhites this season, and is therefore eligible to move.

The 27-year-old signed for Spurs from Real Madrid in the summer of 2020 for a €30m fee, but, despite making 26 and 22 Premier League starts in the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons respectively, the full-back was sent out on loan to Atlético Madrid last season, where he gained just 2 starts and 11 appearances under Diego Simeone.

Nevertheless, with Brentford’s first-choice left-back Rico Henry unavailable until the end of the season with a knee injury, and back-up Aaron Hickey also injured, The Bees will hope to seal a deal before their home fixture against Nottingham Forest this Saturday 20th January.

As they look to clear the four-point gap between themselves and the relegation zone, Thomas Frank’s side are set to receive another significant boost this weekend, with the return of their top scorer last season Ivan Toney expected, following the striker’s eight month ban from football for breaching The FA’s betting regulations.
