Premier League duo Brentford and Bournemouth are keeping a watchful eye over Sunderland talisman Ross Stewart – but will only consider a late January transfer move for the Scotsman should either Ivan Toney or Dominic Solanke depart for big money.

That is according to Scott Burns of the Daily Record, who claims that the 26-year-old Black Cats man is a target for both the Bees and the Cherries in the unlikely event that their own talismen are sold on with five days of the transfer window remaining.

Stewart is still yet to sign an extended contract at the Stadium of Light, with the deal he signed when joining from Ross County in January 2021 set to expire this summer.

Sunderland hold the option to trigger a one-year extension, which will undoubtedly be done should the club not be able to come to terms on a new deal for Stewart, but as of now that option has not come into play.

What year was Sunderland founded?

1879 1889 1899 1909

Despite missing three months of the season through a thigh tear picked up in early September, Stewart is Sunderland’s top scorer in the Championship this season, netting 10 times in 13 appearances.

The Verdict

Sunderland fans probably just want the transfer window to slam shut at this point so the rumours surrounding Stewart can stop.

All the noises seem to suggest that the Scotland international wants to remain on Wearside, yet a new deal is yet to be signed and it remains to be seen when it will.

Sunderland obviously have the comfort blanket that is the one-year extension until 2024, but even that only gives them a limited amount of time to sort a new contract out before the vultures circle again.

In terms of Brentford and Bournemouth’s apparent interest, it’s extremely unlike that Toney or Solanke will depart their respective sides at this point of the season, so this could really be assumed as a non-starter unless something untowards happens in the final few days of the transfer window.
