Ange Postecoglou praised our defensive display after a fine 2-0 victory against Brentford in the Premier League at the Gtech on Sunday.
Brentford had scored 29 goals in 12 matches on home soil before today, but we were resolute and dealt with everything Thomas Frank’s men threw at us - including 37 crosses, according to Opta statistics - with Heung-Min Son’s corner leading to an own goal on 29 minutes and a fine second from Pape Matar Sarr three minutes from time, assisted by Sonny, taking the points back to N17.
Speaking to us at the Gtech, Ange felt the team got their just rewards for all their hard work. “Coming here isn’t easy, they score a lot of goals at home and the way they play, they invariably get a lot of balls into the box, throw-ins, crosses, set-pieces, which you have to deal with. Again, playing on Thursday night, virtually the same team, we had to dig in, and I thought the boys did that outstandingly well. For the most part, we didn’t allow them anything clear cut, any chances they had were under pressure, and we allowed the quality of our football to hurt them going the other way.”
“One of them isn’t a centre-back! We keep forgetting Archie is learning his trade there. Ben’s been great for us, absolutely. Archie’s doing an amazing job. It just goes so much under the radar, but he’s growing all the time. He’s going to be a hell of a player for us. The whole team took on the task of knowing we’re going to have to defend our box. Toni handled it well, the back four... but they had a lot of help from everyone else. The team worked awfully hard and got the rewards.”
“Look, we know the situation we’re in. It’s not a great situation in the league and we have to turn that around. We’ve been through a tough time, for sure. Slowly, but surely, we’re getting players back. We had Djed back today and it made an enormous difference, We’ve one new face through the door, players coming back from injury over the next two weeks, that will give everyone a lift and we need to sustain this form in the league now, get out of the situation we’re in and then tackle the other big tasks ahead of us.”
“It did, the players are going through a tough time, they care, it hurts them, especially our league position and the games we’ve lost. I see how much it hurts them. I’ve said it a few times, they are human beings, and we’ve asked a lot of them, backing up Thursday, Sunday, Thursday, Sunday, consistently, without a lot of rest. So, they care, and they should enjoy today, they’ve earned it.”
“Really excited getting Kevin in. He’s a really strong defender, had a really strong career, getting to the age now where he really wants to kick on. He’s a really good personality as well. I think the group will enjoy having him in and he’ll enjoy it. It comes at the right time for us with Radu getting injured. I’m sure he’ll contribute greatly.”
“We’re still waiting to hear. We’ll probably have more information tomorrow...”
