Leicester City’s top-four dreams are nearly a reality after their 2-1 win put them eight points above fifth-placed West Ham with two games to play, though the Hammers still have a game in hand.
Luke Thomas and Çağlar Söyüncü scored either side of Mason Greenwood’s 15th-minute strike to give the Foxes their biggest win of the season while simultaneously handing Manchester City the Premier League title.
Following the match, manager Brendan Rodgers hailed his side’s ‘big step’ toward Champions League football.
“It’s an extremely important win for us,” Rodgers said in his post-match press conference.
“It’s huge. We’re at 66 points now, which is what two of the sides that finished in there last season got.
“It’s a big step but there are still two games to go and the teams are still chasing us, so we still have work to do.”
Rodgers wasn’t all smiles, however, as he criticised his side’s performance prior to Söyüncü’s winner.
“We scored a brilliant goal, it was great technique, which got us off to a good start,” he said.
“We then played too slow and the speed of our game was poor. We were not precise enough, and when you are like that against a top side, they can hurt you. Any problems came from us losing possession.”
Leicester City will finish the season against Chelsea (18 May) and Tottenham (23 May).
