As in several of Saturday’s top flight fixtures, the game was paused on the 15-minute mark when fans protesting against potential league investment once more hurled chocolate coins onto the field of play.

Bremen thought they had taken the lead, only for their goal to be ruled out for a foul in the build-up following a VAR check, that coming after a flying fingertip save from Manuel Neuer to keep the scores level at half-time.

But just before the hour, Bremen took a surprise lead through Mitchell Weiser as he cut in from the byline on the right and fired an emphatic finish into the roof of the net for what proved to be the winner as Mathys Tel was frustrated by a late strike against the woodwork.

Although this is the most contested fixture in Bundesliga history, it is Werder’s first victory in Bavaria since 2008 and it is also just the second time in the last eight years Bayern have lost at home without scoring in the league.

The result means Bayern remain seven points behind Xabi Alonso’s side, albeit with a game in hand.
