New York City FC has already played their first game of the 2025 Major League Soccer season. The Pigeons and Inter Miami CF shared the points in the 2-2 draw. It was not their best match by any means, for they were outplayed by the Herons, who were down a man for most of the fixture.
Nevertheless, the season has just begun. While NYCFC has a tough start with two road games against powerhouse teams, they will be home before they know it. Growing pains are expected under Pascal Jansen, especially as the new head coach figures out his Santiago Rodríguez and James Sands replacements. Hence, fans should not expect perfection during the next month or two.
NYCFC will play five games in March. Here is a look at the upcoming schedule, which includes the home opener.
NYCFC will play their second game of the season away to Los Angeles FC. The Pigeons have another tough match ahead of them since the California side has finished first in the Western Conference in two of their last three seasons. In three MLS games, the Bronx side has not beaten the LA team either. While March will have difficult matches, this might be the most challenging for NYCFC. They must keep the likes of Denis Bouanga from scoring while also attempting to score against Hugo Lloris. At the same time, the team from Queens will reunite with Maxime Chanot, pending he is not injured. That itself should make this intriguing.
The Pigeons' home opener will take place at Yankee Stadium and will celebrate the team's tenth anniversary in MLS. Fittingly, Orlando City SC will come to town for the match. The two both began MLS play in 2015 and played their first game against one another. NYCFC should strive to win, and hopefully will provide fans with an entertaining performance. If they can only go to one of the two home fixtures in March, then this is the one to attend.
The next home game will be against the New England Revolution. The visitors struggled in 2024, ending the year in 14th place in the Eastern Conference. In addition, NYCFC swept New England in all competitions. They beat them in both MLS fixtures and then knocked them out of the Leagues Cup via a penalty kick shootout. However, this season the Revolution added Leonardo Campana and Jackson Yueill. One should assume they will not be the same side as last year.
Unfortunately, the tough road games of March will continue after the two-game homestand. NYCFC will travel to Ohio to take on the Columbus Crew. The Pigeons tend to struggle in Columbus and have suffered devastating losses because of the black and gold team. Cucho Hernández might have left, but there are still many attackers, like Diego Rossi, who can hurt the Bronx side. Moreover, Head Coach Wilfried Nancy has out-coached Nick Cushing in the past. So, it will be interesting to see how Janesn manages the Boys in Blue against one of the better MLS coaches.
Finally, NYCFC will end the month on the road when they battle Atlanta United FC. The team will face a familiar face in Ronny Deila, who is the new head coach of the Five Stripes. The former NYCFC head coach led the team to their first MLS Cup in 2021. The reunion will be nice, but this will be another test for Jansen. Can he lead his team to a win over the former coach's new team? The fixture will surely be a must-watch.
