Four years ago, Marcelo Gallardo became the manager of River Plate at age 38.

After he won the league with Nacional in 2012, Gallardo has become one of the most successful managers in River Plate history. The eight trophies he has achieved since he took over in 2014 are second only to Ramón Díaz, who won nine titles in two separate stints with the club.

Gallardo’s success with River, which includes the 2015 Copa Libertadores and 2014 Copa Sudamerica crowns, has led him to be one of the popular contenders to take over the Argentina helm after Jorge Sampaoli’s departure.

The former PSG, Monaco, and River Plate attacking midfielder has plenty of experience with the Albiceleste, as Gallardo scored 13 goals in 44 caps and was in their 1998 and 2002 World Cup squads.

However, El Muñeco is currently happy at River and does not plan to leave to occupy the bench of the Albiceleste.

Including national and international cup competition (82 games), Gallardo’s record in 206 matches in charge is 106 wins, 57 draws, and 43 defeats, good for a 60.67% winning percentage.

His success comes with a grain of salt, as Gallardo has still yet to win the league with River, with second place finishes in 2014/15 and 2016/17.
