Ajax have officially announced the sacking of head coach Maurice Steijn. The news was announced via the club website on Monday evening. Steijn, 49, had endured a hectic start to the season, witnessing his new side lose four of their opening seven Eredivisie matches. Ajax are currently 17th in the league table, which is the lowest they’ve ever been since the start of the competition in 1956. On Sunday, Ajax lost 4-3 to FC Utrecht. This was the final straw for Steijn.

Maurice Steijn joined Ajax off the back of two successful seasons in charge of Sparta Rotterdam. Unfortunately, things haven’t worked out in Amsterdam for the fairly inexperienced head coach. After just eleven matches with Ajax, the Dutch giants have made the decision to sack him. The decision has been made just two days before Ajax’s clash with Brighton in the Europa League.

In a statment on the club website, Maurice Steijn said ‘This morning I had a meeting with the management and we met again at the end of the afternoon. We came to the conclusion that this is now the best thing for Ajax, although I think it is a terrible shame. Everyone who knows that I have done everything I can to bring Ajax back to where this club belongs. But I was not successful. I would like to thank the supporters and the people I have worked with here and I hope that Ajax will soon takes the road up.’
