The Brazilian Federation (CBF) revealed the numbers that are to be worn by each of the Seleção’s players in Russia 2018.
Some of Brazil’s stars, who are expected to be in Tite’s XI, aren’t going to be wearing the traditional numbers 1 to 11 usually used by starters. That is probably the main change compared to other Brazil’s World Cup squads. While others will be sporting the same number they use at their respective clubs.
Thiago Silva will be wearing Dani Alves’ number 2 – which was also used by Cafu in multiple World Cups. Geromel, who’s considered the fourth option at centre back, will wear number 4. Marcelo, who used Roberto Carlos’ number 6 in Brazil 2014, will instead be wearing number 12, just like he does at Real Madrid.
The legendary 10 that was immortalized by players like Pelé and Zico, to the surprise of no one, is reserved for Neymar Jr. While the number 9 once famously worn by Ronaldo, is to be sported by Gabriel Jesus. Romario and Ronaldinho won World Cups for Brazil wearing number 11, and now it’s Philippe Coutinho’s jersey.
