Liverpool have confirmed that Brazilian goalkeeping legend Claudio Taffarel has joined the club’s first-team coaching staff.
The 55-year-old will assist current coaches John Achterberg and Jack Robinson in working with the Reds’ goalkeepers.
Taffarel had a prestigious playing career, earning over 100 caps for Brazil and helping them win the World Cup in 1994 before finishing as a runner-up four years later in France.
Jürgen Klopp spoke about the reasoning behind the appointment to the club website, stating: “We want to build kind of our own philosophy in goalkeeping because we all agree it’s its own game, so that’s why we wanted to have another completely different view on it.
“We spoke to Alisson because two of the best goalies in the world are Brazilians and so we found a solution with bringing in Taffarel as a really nice addition to our whole coaching staff.
“We really think it can give us just a different view again, to look at different things.”
Taffarel will also continue with a role he currently holds with the Brazilian Football Federation ahead of the 2022 World Cup.
