Argentina and Brazil were both in World Cup qualifying action on Tuesday.

Colombia fall into seventh place after 1-0 Argentina defeat

For the seventh World Cup qualifying match in a row, Colombia’s attack were held without a goal as they suffered a 1-0 defeat in Argentina.

Lautaro Martínez scored the game’s only goal just before the half-hour mark as a Marcos Acuña cross landed perfectly at his feet, allowing him to finish expertly from 12 yards.

For the Inter Milan star, it was his seventh goal of the qualifying cycle, taking his international tally to an incredible 19 goals in 37 career caps.

Interestingly, with the victory, Lionel Scaloni becomes the first manager of Argentina to defeat every Conmebol team while leading the Albiceleste to their 29th match unbeaten – the longest current streak in international football.

With just two games remaining, Colombia’s chances of reaching Qatar are looking bleak, though they will wrap up qualifying against Bolivia and Venezuela.

Los Cafeteros are currently five points behind fourth-placed Uruguay for the final automatic place, while fifth-placed Peru are four points ahead.


Brazil officially eliminate Paraguay from World Cup contention

Brazil continued their unbeaten World Cup qualifying run as they took care of Paraguay by a 4-0 scoreline on Tuesday night.

With the defeat, Paraguay have been mathematically eliminated from Qatar 2022.

Brazil were in full control of the match, dominating with 77% possession and used that to dominate their inferior opponents.

Raphinha got things started in the 28th minute with a lovely taken goal, expertly taking down a ball from Marquinhos before cutting inside and finishing at the near-post.

Coutinho would score a 30-yard thunderbolt just past the 60-minute mark, with Marquinhos once again starting the move from the midfield circle.

Antony and Rodrygo would add insurance goals late on as Brazil continue to complete their qualifying run in style.
