Raphinha scores brace on full debut as Brazil overpower Uruguay

Scorers: Neymar 10′, Raphinha 18′, 58′, Gabigol 83′; Suárez 77′

Raphinha scored his first two career international goals in his first career start as Brazil used an eight-minute first-half flurry to defeat Uruguay 4-1.

Neymar got the action started just 10 minutes into proceedings with his 70th career goal for Brazil, showcasing unbelievable awareness in the box to side-step the goalkeeper and blast the ball into the net past a pair of Uruguay defenders.

Eight minutes later it was the Leeds United star who made his mark, pouncing on a rebound to mark his full debut in style.

After the break, Raphinha would make a sensational run half the length of a pitch to get behind the defence and blast a shot of the inside of the post into the bottom corner to extend Brazil’s lead to three.

Luis Suárez would raise some eyebrows in the 77th minute with a beautifully-take free-kick to get Uruguay back in the game but Gabigol would put the match firmly to bed six minutes later with his fifth-career international goal.

Despite having seven qualifying games to play, Brazil have already clinched a place in the top-five and now need just one more point to secure their place in Qatar.

Uruguay are currently in fifth place in the standings on 16 points and only have six games remaining on their qualifying schedule.

Argentina survive late scare and hold off Peru

Scorers: L. Martínez 43′

Argentina were able to escape El Monumental with a 1-0 victory over Peru as Lautaro Martínez’s 43rd-minute goal provided the difference.

Udinese’s Nahuel Molina provided an inch-perfect cross for the Inter Milan star, who could not head the ball any harder past Pedro Gallese.

The turning point of the match undoubtedly came in the 65th minute when Yoshimar Yotún drilled his penalty off the crossbar after Emiliano Martinez committed a foul on Jefferson Farfán in the box.

The Albiceleste were unlucky to not have won by a larger margin as they had a pair of goals rightly disallowed during the fierce contest.

Argentina maintain their stranglehold on second place in the Conmebol standings (25 points) while Peru’s qualification hopes are starting to wither as they finish the October Fifa date in ninth place on just 11 points.
