Vincent Aboubakar brought a chaotic end to the group stages of the 2022 World Cup when he scored a dramatic late winner against Brazil on Friday night.

Nobody gave Cameroon a chance in their attempts to defeat the five-time champions at the Lusail Iconic Stadium having disappointed with a 1-0 defeat to Switzerland and chaotic 3-3 draw with Serbia.

But alas, Rigobert Song’s men clearly smelt the opportunity to pounce on potential complacency from the Selecao, who had already booked their place in the round of 16.

And just as Tite looked to have overseen a rather unremarkable 0-0 draw to round off their group stage campaign, that’s when Aboubakar popped up to throw an almighty spanner in the works.

The Al Nassr striker, fresh from scoring an outrageous lob against Serbia, shocked the world by scoring a dramatic stoppage-time winner with an inch-perfect header from Jerome Ngom Mbekeli’s cross.

It might not have been enough to secure a place in the knockout stages for the Indomitable Lions, but the stadium erupted nonetheless in the knowledge that they were at least ending their Qatar 2022 journey in spectacular.

Why was Aboubakar sent off?

However, although Cameroon did indeed hold onto their 1-0 lead to secure a historic result, the drama didn’t end there because, well, Aboubakar got a little carried away with himself.

Such was the joy of scoring a winner against the World Cup’s most successful ever team that the 30-year-old proceeded to whip off his jersey despite already picking up a yellow card earlier in the game.

As such, the referee was left with absolutely no choice but to rain on Aboubakar’s parade by dishing out a second yellow card and duly sending him for an early bath.

But sending off or not, Aboubakar’s strike almost had the added significance of leaving the door ajar for Switzerland to upset the odds and actually usurp Brazil in the Group G standings.

In the end, though, Brazil managed to survive their late wobbly and can now look forward to a round of 16 clash with South Korea at Stadium 974 on Monday, December 5

Meanwhile, Switzerland will lock horns with Portugal at the Lusail Iconic Stadium on Tuesday, December 6, while Serbia and Cameroon make their way home.
