Bradley Cross talks about his recent development with Kaizer Chiefs!
Kaizer Chiefs' Bradley Cross has opened up about adapting to a new tactical role this season, having shifted from his lifelong position as a central defender to become the team's starting left-back.
The 24-year-old, who was exclusively a left-sided centre-back during his developmental years, has seamlessly made the change since his move from Golden Arrows in September 2024. He has been an ever-present figure on the left flank for Amakhosi, demonstrating his versatility.
His importance to the squad is underscored by his consistent selection, having started all three of the team's opening league fixtures. Cross has been a key component of a defense that has yet to be breached, contributing to consecutive clean sheets against Stellenbosch FC, Polokwane City FC, and Richards Bay.
Bradley Cross has detailed his ongoing tactical evolution at Kaizer Chiefs, explaining that his professional foundation was built exclusively in central defense. "Well, I have been a left centre-back since I was young. I played as a left centre-back at FC Schalke and Newcastle United," the defender stated during Monday's media session at Naturena.
While adapting to his new responsibilities, Cross emphasized that his development remains a work in progress, noting, "I have also been able to play left-back, but I'm still learning and improving in that position."
The timing of his adjustment period coincides with the club's most critical test of the season—a Wednesday night encounter against Mamelodi Sundowns that could define their championship credentials. The match arrives amid a historically significant start for Amakhosi, who currently sit second with a perfect nine points from three matches. This marks the first time since the 2014/15 season under Stuart Baxter that the club has opened with three consecutive victories—a campaign that ultimately concluded with league glory.
