Bayern left-back David Alaba still has a contract until 2021, but he’s been running it down for a while now. Sport Bild report that he’s not sure whether he wants to extend at all. The likes of Real Madrid and FC Barcelona attract him as possible moves away.
Still just 27 years old and with a year on his deal this summer, Alaba will make a top-quality signing at a cut-price if he chooses not to extend his current contract.
Speaking last month, Alaba admitted he can imagine playing somewhere else. He didn’t rule out a move to England and confirmed he was a boyhood Arsenal fan.
“We’ll see,” Alaba said of a move to England. “I know the Premier League very well because I followed it a lot when I was younger. I supported Arsenal. Patrick Vieira was one of my favourite players.
“At the moment, I don’t think too much about it but I can imagine playing somewhere else.”
Arsenal have a few left-back options already. Kieran Tierney is returning from injury, and Sead Kolasinac should make it back before football does. Bukayo Saka was also a bit of a revelation in the absence of those two.
Alaba is a top full-back though, and he can also play centre-back. The Austrian international moved to a central position in November and remained there until the Bundesliga’s postponement.
If Arsenal have the chance to sign him, I doubt they’ll turn it down over the rather injury-prone options they have in defence currently. Unfortunately, he’s a good enough player to get plenty of other offers.
