Boyd’s comments about Rangers situation are bang on | OneFootball

Someone made a very sharp observation recently, and we must admit, despite the fact we prefer Allan McGregor over Jon McLaughlin, it’s hard to fault the logic of the point:

Despite the fact McGregor had the worst season of his career last season, Jon McLaughlin was not deemed good enough to take his place between the sticks, amassing just 15 appearances, and McGregor signed a new deal to keep himself on.

Only suddenly now McLaughlin IS good enough?

Kris Boyd has weighed in on the situation too – Boydy has gained a lot of popularity and credibility the past two seasons after his initial post-Rangers media career was derided by many of a blue persuasion, particularly his columns in the paper.

But his latest comments are sensible – less digging at McLaughlin, more confusion over why McGregor is still at Rangers at 41 as a number two.

Did McGregor sign a new deal being told he would be number two?

In truth, we don’t think this situation is being handled especially well, and it would be wrong to say the new number one hasn’t let us down, having been largely responsible for two goals conceded already this season.

It would also be wrong to argue McGregor didn’t let us down last season either, with that notorious trip to Livi still vivid in the memory.

But there is a puzzle here. McLaughlin is not favoured by around 85% of the support, who might prefer McGregor of the two but would prefer a new keeper signed instead.

And it means the rearguard is unsettled.

Connor Goldson hasn’t been particularly good so far, and fans are not convinced by James Sands.

What we’d like is the defence and goalkeeping situation resolved to a level that satisfies the majority.

If McLaughlin wasn’t good enough to take over the goalkeeping slot last season when McGregor was at his worst, what’s changed over summer to make him good enough now?

It’s a bit messy and Boyd isn’t wrong about McGregor and his new deal.

It really is pointless his being here if he’s not going to play at all.
