Bournemouth have confirmed that Gary O’Neil has been appointed the club’s new permanent manager.

The 39-year-old had been in interim charge since the sacking of Scott Parker following the 9-0 defeat to Liverpool in September.

There had been links with the likes of Marcelo Bielsa and Chris Wilder with the vacant position at the Vitality Stadium but after 12 games in the role as temporary head coach, the former Portsmouth midfielder has now been given the reins full time on an initial one-and-a-half year deal.

Bournemouth chief executive Neill Blake told the club’s official website: “Gary did an excellent job on an interim basis and the board are delighted to make his position as club head coach permanent.

“We have been impressed with the way he has conducted himself from the moment he joined the club and feel he has earned the opportunity to continue to take the team and club forward.”

O’Neil has guided the Cherries to four wins and four draws, a run which saw them sit in 14th in the Premier League table heading into the World Cup break while they also have an EFL Cup round of 16 tie against Newcastle United to come.
