There are quite a few players that Celtic have been linked with for years without ever succeeding in signing them. One name that comes to mind immediately in that regard is Mathias Kvistgaarden of Brondby IF. There are rumours that the Hoops will try to sign him next summer as well, despite several on numerous occasions over the past two seasons.
He is not the only one who has been linked with Celtic for a while though. Another name that falls under that category is that of Caoimhin Kelleher.
The Liverpool goalkeeper was heavily linked with Celtic in the summer. But ultimately, the Hoops ended up making a move for Kasper Schmeichel.
Since then, Schmeichel has been handed an extension and will stay at Parkhead beyond this season. On the other hand, it looks like there is some clarity on the situation of Kelleher as well.
Many Celtic fans felt that someone like Kelleher would be perfect for the club. He would represent a long-term solution between the posts for the Hoops, something that they have not had in many years now. The transfer fee was always going to prove steep though.
And as reported by The Sun, Bournemouth are confident of winning the race against Big Six clubs to sign Kelleher this summer. The Cherries are ready to move first, putting them in pole position, as manager Andoni Iraola has made signing a goalkeeper a priority with the Liverpool player his top target.
Of course, despite all the links, there is very little chance that Celtic would have made a move for Kelleher anyway. So, this does not really come as a blow for the Hoops. That being said, the club do need to sign a long-term goalkeeper when Schmeichel leaves. They have been filling that role with short-term solutions for quite a while now. Stability is needed.
