Bournemouth 1 Newcastle 1 – Sunday 25 August 2pm

Iraola’s previous club had the best stats in La Liga for pressing and regaining possession high up the pitch.

United struggled to cope with those tactics and it was no surprise when they conceded after Joelinton lost possession 35 yards out. Krafth let the low cross run past him rather than risk an intervention, which was costly.

Such was United’s lack of potency that Neto was untested in the first hour.

Trippier and Barnes replaced Livramento and Murphy on 58 minutes but there was no obvious improvement.

Bournemouth conceded 15 free kicks to United’s four in the first 65 minutes, but they were cynical, clever fouls rather than vicious ones, according to the referee, who booked only Christie.

The next two changes, on 68 minutes, did have a positive effect.

Willock and Hall replaced Longstaff and Kelly, which immediately made United more dangerous.

A clearance with the keeper beaten and a good save by Neto denied us a headed equaliser. For the first time since the opening minutes we dominated possession and pushed Bournemouth back.

The goal came when Barnes on the left cut inside and whipped a perfect ball beyond the far post with his right foot. Gordon made his first meaningful contribution to half-volley the ball into the net from about two yards, on the angle. An excellent finish after an anonymous 75 minutes.

Gordon played only four minutes for England at the Euros but he has looked listless so far this season… and he is not the only one.

Bournemouth came close to scoring a second soon after Gordon equalised but Neto was the keeper who was severely tested, saving impressively from a towering Burn header.

Three quick corners by Trippier on the left came to nothing but we were looking the better team. Bournemouth still posed a threat, however, and Hall did well to deny Semenyo at the far post on 84 minutes.

Bournemouth made their final two substitutions on 85 minutes as they went for the win. They continued to press and deny United the time and space they wanted.

Gordon took on his full-back on the outside and whipped in a couple of dangerous crosses at the other end, which were his last contributions. Almiron replaced him on 89 minutes, seconds after Burn was booked for blocking a quick clearance by Neto.

Guimaraes extended Neto with a high, curling left-footer before Pope parried a fierce Semenyo shot that went for a corner and that was all Bournemouth needed, with Ouattara putting the cross into the net.

What is this though?

The player had used his bicep to score. VAR rightfully saved us a point.

Joelinton, who had been largely ineffective, grabbed Neto around the shoulder to stop him quickly clearing a Barnes cross as the extended stoppage time reached six minutes and that yellow card was pretty much the final action of this match.
