Speaking with L’Équipe former Marseille and now Bayern Munich right-sided player Bouna Sarr (29) discussed how he came to sign for Bayern.
Tell us about your move from Marseille to Bayern last year.“We played Munich in a friendly during the summer. The next day, Marseille’s video analyst Anthony Santiago sent me a message saying me that I impressed a lot of the Bayern directors sitting next to him in the stands. For me, it’s harmless… There are five or six days left of the transfer window. One morning, my agent calls me early… and asks: ‘Would you be able to undergo a medical?’ Surprised, I answer: ‘Yes, why?’ He continues: ‘Bayern want to sign you.’ Generally, my agent only comes to me if there’s something concrete… Then, a few minutes later, I call him back: ‘Wait, what did you say to me?! Bayern!?’ Everything happened, I signed on the last day of the transfer window.”
At Bayern, you started a few games in the autumn, then the situation gets complicated. Why?“Coach Flick said to me: ‘You have the profile I was looking for, I didn’t take you to be an understudy, but as a number one. If you’re good, you’re going to play.’ In the German Cup, it went well, I provided two assists for Choupo-Moting. I entered the rotation, Benji [Pavard] is injured. What people don’t know is I was gritting my teeth, my knee hurts, I had to take anti-inflammatory drugs before every game. The day before Der Klassiker against Dortmund, I hurt myself in training. There’s no other right-back, I have to play despite the pain. It was a very average performance but we win 3-2. I said to myself when I get home: ‘But how am I going to get on? I wasn’t good today, my knee still hurts, what will happen next?'”
