Coming into Sunday’s Matchday 27 game on back-to-back wins, Botafogo brought confidence and hopes of reaching a third consecutive victory to spark a late surge up the Brasileirão Série A table.
São Paulo is near the top of the league and sought the full three points to battle a number of other teams for supremacy.
The home team started the match with high pressure and in the fifth minute Gustavo Bochecha got on the end of a cross from Moisés and beat full back Edimar to the ball. Goalkeeper Sidão was alert early and made the diving save to force a corner kick.
On the ensuing corner, Rodrigo Lindoso flicked the ball towards the far post and Jean Carlos slid in to open the scoring in the fifth minute.
Less than three minutes later, São Paulo equalised through Diego Souza.
Nenê’s cross into the box deflected off of one Botafogo defender before another stuck his leg out trying to block a pass but inadvertently knocked the ball to Souza who finished clinically past Saulo.
In the 25th minute, forward Kieza played a one-two with Erik Lima before showcasing a brilliant bit of skill to beat centre back Anderson Martins and score on Sidão.
Unfortunately for the visitors, they needed more than three minutes to tie the game a second time. After a listless rest of the first half and a few early second-half chances by Botafogo, São Paulo struck again.
On a free kick just wide of the 18-yard-box, the Tricolor put the ball on frame. Saulo blocked the initial shot but gave up a juicy rebound that Gonzalo Carneiro snatched on to knot the match in the 62nd minute.
After the equaliser, Botafogo had a penalty claim from Igor Rabello waved away before Saulo withstood heavy pressure at the end of the match.
With the draw, Botafogo move to 33 points and sit in 12th place. São Paulo are presently in third place on 52 points, just one point behind Palmeiras and Internacional.
