Besiktas are the only team yet to pick up a single point in the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League and will be aiming not to join the list of 21 clubs that have lost all six of their group games in the competition. Here is the facts preview on Tuesday's match.

The match facts

  • For the first time in 32 years, both clubs are set to go head-to-head in an international competition. The only previous meeting came in the first round of the 1989/90 Cup Winners' Cup, when Borussia Dortmund claimed a 1-0 win in Turkey thanks to Frank Mill's goal. BVB followed that up with a 2-1 victory in the return leg with goals by Martin Driller and Jürgen Wegmann.
  • In the reverse fixture in this Champions League campaign, BVB ultimately ran out narrow 2-1 winners with goals scored by Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland in the first half, with Montero pulling one back for Besiktas in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
  • Besiktas forward Michy Batshuayi spent the second half of 2017/18 on loan at Borussia Dortmund and scored seven goals in 10 Bundesliga appearances. He also managed two goals in four matches in the UEFA Europa League.

Borussia facts

  • The last game against Turkish opposition prior to the 2-1 win in the reverse fixture was a 4-0 win over Galatasaray in the 2014/15 UEFA Champions League group stages. Marco Reus scored the third goal in that game.
  • BVB have won six of their last nine home games in the Champions League.
  • Borussia have won three of their last four home games against Turkish clubs, most recently beating Galatasaray 4-1 in the group stages of the 2014/15 UEFA Champions League. Marco Reus opened the scoring in that one.

Besiktas facts

  • The Turkish giants are back in the UEFA Champions League group stages for the first time since 2017/18. It is their eighth involvement in the group phase. Galatasaray are the only Turkish club to have participated more often (16).
  • In their aforementioned 2017/18 UCL campaign, Besiktas went unbeaten in a group with Porto, Leipzig and Monaco and reached the knockout stages for the first and only time in their history.
  • Their biggest success dates back to the 1986/87 season, when they made it to the quarter-finals of the European Champions Cup as it was then called.
  • Besiktas won the Turkish title for the 16th time last season – it was the third time they have lifted the title in the past six seasons – and claimed their first double since 2008/09.
  • Their record against German teams – two wins, one draw and nine defeats – is negative. Their only win was a 2-0 triumph against Leipzig in 2017/18.
