Borussia Monchengladbach sporting director Roland Virkus has suggested a permanent switch for Max Wober is unlikely if Leeds United gain Premier League promotion.

The 26-year-old joined the German outfit on loan last summer following the Whites relegation to the Championship.

The defender has hit the ground running at Borussia-Park as he started 21 Bundesliga matches, with four goal contributions to his name.

Monchengladbach are interested in making his move permanent in the summer but they need to reach an agreement with Leeds.

Giving an update on Wober’s future, Roland Virkus said (as per BILD): “We are currently in discussions with everyone involved.

“The thing is, Max would like to stay with us. But Leeds are first in the English second division, will be promoted and have high expectations.

“We try everything, but we don’t have the reins of action in our hands.”

Max Wober joined Leeds from Red Bull Salzburg in January last year for a fee around £11 million.

However, he was among the several players who left Elland Road when the club suffered relegation.

The Whites’ excellent 2023-24 campaign means they are hot favourites to make an immediate return to the Premier League.

Gaining promotion could see Wober return to the Yorkshire side as the club would look to strengthen their defensive ranks.

Ethan Ampadu and Joe Rodon have been the first choice defenders for Leeds this season.

But Ampadu was signed as more of a holding midfielder and Rodon has only joined the club on loan from Tottenham Hotspur.

Therefore, manager Daniel Farke could opt to bring back Wober to Elland Road at the end of the season, if they gain promotion.
