Borussia Mönchengladbach have confirmed two big pieces of news. First, after two years serving as squad captain, Swiss keeper Jonas Omlin will be ceding the armband to German striker Tim Kleindienst. Omlin has also lost the training camp battle to earn the starting keeper slot. Moritz Nicolas will enter the coming Bundesliga season as head coach Gerardo Seoane’s No. 1.
It was Seoane himself who tapped Omlin to serve as captain during the summer of 2023. Omlin joined Gladbach in January of that year to replace long-time skipper Yann Sommer, who moved on to Bayern Munich. Seoane thanked the 31-year-old for his service in a statement posted on Gladbach’s website. The BMG head coach also explained another change to the team’s leadership council.
German midfielder Julian Weigl will be dropped to make way for new signing Kevin Diks. Weigl forfeits his vice captain status. Rocco Reitz will be promoted in Weigl’s stead. Philipp Sander and Nico Elvedi round out the leadership council, who will have to wait until November to play the first match under Kleindienst’s stewardship
“Jonas [Omlin] took over the role two years ago at a time when many experienced personalities had left the club, and he has performed it with great commitment and a sense of responsibility ever since,” Seoane noted in his statement. “Julian [Weigl] also did an excellent job last season and has always been very loyal to the team and the club.
“[Kleindienst] has everything it takes to fill the role,” Seoane added of his new captain, saying of the keeper race: “There were intensive internal discussions over this close contest. [Nicolas] appears a touch more reliable at this level.“
