Borussia Mönchengladbach, legendary opponents for Real Madrid

Real Madrid and Borussia Mönchengladbach meet again in Europe after 35 years. The name of the German team brings back good memories for the Real Madrid fans, as the Whites staged a legendary comeback against this team in December 1985.

In the first leg of the UEFA Cup Round of 16, Borussia won 5-1 on home soil, leaving the tie almost a foregone conclusion. However, Real Madrid don't accept the word impossible and at the Santiago Bernabéu they completed a historic achievement by winning 4-0. The siege on the German goal saw two goals scored inside the first 20th minute of the match. Both of them coming from the head of Valdano. The fans then had to wait until the second half for the third, when Santillana struck to make it 3-0.

A joyous finale The Cantabrian forward proved to be a hero of that tie, scoring the decisive goal in an epic last minute. With the score at 4-0, Juanito was substituted and his leaps of joy as he headed to the sidelines went down in history as an icon of that magical night. Thanks to this comeback, Real Madrid were able to continue on the road to their second UEFA Cup triumph.

Other previous meetings That UEFA Cup tie is the last meeting between the two teams. Prior to that, the teams played in the quarter-finals of the European Cup in March 1976. The first leg in Germany ended 2-2 and the second leg in Madrid 1-1, seeing the Whites qualify for the next round on away goals.
