Three years after suffering a devastating leg break in a UEFA Youth League match against Legia Warsaw, Dortmund’s Dario Scuderi has retired from football at age 21.

Doctors told Scuderi at the time it was ‘one of the worst injuries you could imagine’, yet somehow the youngster returned to training at the end of the 2017-18 season and even made it onto the substitutes bench for the U-23s in May.

However, the risks have been determined to far outweigh the potential benefits and he will now continue his career in a different capacity. He has begun training at the BVB football school.

“It was not an easy decision, playing football was always my big dream and I gave everything for it.

“I fought and also had offers to keep playing. Borussia Dortmund is my family and I’m looking forward to doing something new.”

Less than two weeks prior to his horrific injury, Scuderi had made his first two appearances for the Italy U-19s.
