Borussia Dortmund are hoping to take a lead back to the French capital as they host PSG in the first-leg of this Champions League semi-final on Wednesday.

Borussia Dortmund’s Bundesliga campaign has been less than impressive, but die Schwarzgelben have saved their better performances for the Champions League so far this season.

After emerging from the toughest group of the tournament alongside PSG ahead of Newcastle United and AC Milan, they now must face the French giants once again at the final four stage.

Unsurprisingly, les Parisiens have enjoyed a more fruitful league campaign and they were confirmed Ligue 1 champions for a record 12th time over the weekend following Monaco’s 3-2 defeat at Lyon.

Les Rouges-et-Bleues have not yet managed to achieve the ultimate goal of lifting the Champions League but they’re favourites to reach the second final in their history by beating BVB in this semi-final clash.

PSG out to repeat group stage exploits

We’ve seen teams meet in the group stages before coming to blows again later in the tournament before now, but PSG will be hoping to avoid any complacency this time around when remembering their results against Borussia Dortmund in the group stages.

These two sides got their campaigns underway against each other at Parc des Princes back in September with the hosts running out 2-0 winners thanks to a Kylian Mbappe penalty and a goal from Achraf Hakimi against his former club.

By the time the sides met again at Westfalenstadion in December, Dortmund had already managed to qualify for the knock-out stages, but PSG needed help from AC Milan in beating Newcastle as they earned a 1-1 draw in Germany.

Warren Zaire-Emery’s quickfire equaliser cancelled out Karim Adeyemi’s opener in that game and you suspect Luis Enrique would be happy with another vital draw in this match so his side can take the game back to Paris and a raucous, expectant home crowd.

Borussia Dortmund vs PSG team news

Borussia Dortmund are hoping that defender Mats Hummels has recovered in time to feature after limping off in the side’s humiliating weekend defeat to RB Leipzig, while left-back Ian Maatsen could also miss out and Ramy Bensebaini is a definite absentee

In attack, there are further doubts over Donyell Malen who is struggling with a thigh injury and Sebastien Haller continues to miss out with an ankle injury.

PSG boss Luis Enrique opted to rest a handful of key players for PSG’s Ligue 1 draw with Le Havre over the weekend, but the likes of Nuno Mendes, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Fabian Ruiz and of course their talisman Kylian Mbappe are expected to be returned to the starting line-up on Wednesday.

Presnel Kimpembe is a long-term absentee having not featured for over a year since rupturing his Achilles tendon against Marseille in February 2023.
