Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain meet in the Champions League semi-finals this evening, as both teams look to secure a positive first-leg result at the Westfalenstadion.
After meeting twice in the group stage, the two are familiar opponents and hoping to continue Champions League campaigns that have perhaps exceeded expectations so far.
Here is everything you need to know about Wednesday’s clash:
Borussia Dortmund: LWWDL
Borussia Dortmund enter the clash after a damaging domestic defeat at the weekend, as Leipzig thrashed Edin Terzic’s side 4-1 at the Red Bull Arena. It’s been a challenging campaign in the Bundesliga for Dortmund, who after agonisingly missing out on the title in the final seasons of last season have struggled to replicate those performances.
Currently fifth in the table, Germany’s favourable co-efficient placing is likely to salvage a Champions League place that the club would otherwise have missed out on through league finish.
It’s been a season of inconsistency and Dortmund’s form heading into the clash is mixed. Two wins from six games is a concern, ahead of the club’s biggest game of the season.
The exits of Jude Bellingham and Raphael Guerreiro have been felt, though summer signing Niclas Füllkrug has led the charge with 14 goals in all competitions. Fellow recruit Marcel Sabitzer will hope to continue his form in Europe after a match-winning performance against Atletico Madrid in the last round. The Austrian has provided the most assists (5) in the Champions League this season.
Paris Saint-Germain: LWWWD
Paris Saint-Germain overturned a first-leg defeat on home soil to thrash 10-man Barcelona and reach the Champions League semi-finals. Kylian Mbappe scored twice in Catalonia and is the Champions League’s leading scorer on eight goals.
The Frenchman – who will depart on a free transfer in the summer – has now scored a career-best 43 goals in all competitions and will hope to end his time in Paris on the perfect note, with an elusive Champions League success.
PSG will need to tighten up defensively, however, and trailed three times during a 3-3 draw with Le Havre at the weekend. Luis Enrique’s side have just two clean sheets from their last nine Ligue 1 games. However, with the French title secured, full focus is now on Europe.
PSG will need to overcome a poor record in this fixture having failed to win in three previous visits to Dortmund.
Borussia Dortmund 1-1 PSG, Champions League group stage, 13/12/2023
Having already met in this season’s Champions League Group of Death, PSG snatched a place in the knockout rounds with a 1-1 draw at already-qualified Borussia Dortmund.
Warren Zaire-Emery scored the crucial goal for the visitors at the Westfalenstadion, as the 17-year-old cancelled out Karim Adeyemi’s opener just five minutes earlier.
The teenager’s drilled effort confirmed progress for PSG, after Newcastle lost at home to AC Milan. PSG had earlier won the home meeting with Dortmund 2-0 at the Parc des Princes.
Borussia Dortmund: Kobel; Ryerson, Hummels, Schlotterback, Maatsen; Sabizter, Can, Brandt; Sancho, Adeyemi, Füllkrug.
Paris Saint-Germain: Donnarumma; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Hernandez, Mendes; Vitinha, Zaire-Emery, Ruiz; Dembele, Barcola, Mbappe.
