Manchester City take a trip to Signal Iduna Park to face off against Champions League Group G runners-up Borussia Dortmund in a pivotal clash.

With two games left and three points separating the sides, the Cityzens could lock down the top spot in Group G should they avoid defeat in Germany.

Pep Guardiola’s men came from a one-goal down to beat Dortmund 2-1 in the reverse fixture on matchday two, which formed part of their three-match winning Champions League start.

However, Riyad Mahrez’s missed penalty in a dull 0-0 draw at Copenhagen means Man City cannot afford to rotate much in North Rhine-Westphalia if they’re to consolidate their place at the summit.

After being knocked down from their 100% Champions League start, the back-to-back Premier League champions went on to lose 1-0 at Liverpool before overcoming Brighton & Hove Albion 3-1 at the weekend.

Dortmund enjoyed an equally successful weekend in the Bundesliga, as Edin Terzic’s side ran riot in an eye-catching 5-0 demolition of Stuttgart at this venue.

Having won their last two domestic fixtures without conceding, Die Borussen will feel confident about going unbeaten against Man City and nailing down a berth in the Champions League knock-out stages.

Despite their mixed Group G start (W2, D1, L1), the Germans are in a prime position to advance to the round of 16, as they need a point from the last two matches to leave Sevilla and Copenhagen in their wake.

Match Preview

Borussia Dortmund

Signal Iduna Park has been Dortmund’s stronghold in the Champions League lately, with Terzic’s team only losing twice in their last 14 home outings in Europe’s most prestigious club competition (W8, D4).

One of those defeats came at the hands of Man City in April 2021, making it three losses from Die Borussen’s five Champions League encounters against the reigning Premier League holders (W1, D1).

While they may not be heavily fancied to win here, Dortmund should at least trouble the scoreboard, considering they’ve failed to score only once in their last 20 Champions League matches.

Manchester City

Man City’s abovementioned home victory over Dortmund has further solidified their jaw-dropping 16-game form against Bundesliga adversaries in the Champions League (W14, D1, L1).

But Guardiola’s men have blown hot and cold across their last six road trips in all competitions (W2, D3, L1), meaning another win in Germany is far from a foregone conclusion.

A resilient backline could be the key to firing the Cityzens past Dortmund, with the Premier League powerhouse coming into this round as one of only two sides yet to concede from open play this Champions League season.

Borussia Dortmund vs Manchester City Prediction

A draw would be a ‘win-win’ outcome as it’d allow both teams to achieve their goals.

But that doesn’t mean they’d settle for a share of the spoils. Despite Dortmund’s strong home form in continental action, Man City could prove a tall order.

We expect Guardiola’s side to cement the top spot in style, with Erling Haaland likely to continue his scoring spree on his emotional return to Signal Iduna Park.
