Borussia Dortmund have successfully stopped an AfD campaign from using the club’s colours and slogan, reports NRZ.
The right-wing political party has long been associated with an anti-migrant rhetoric and faces strong opposition from different groups in Germany.
Ahead of local elections on Sunday 10th August, the AfD (Alternative für Deutschland) planned on releasing a sticker campaign using the famous Yellow Black colour scheme with the following slogan – “Black and yellow for football – blue on Sunday.”
BVB issued a cease-and-desist letter on Monday, meaning the party can not legally use the stickers, which would in turn associate the club with the political group. In the past, the group has used different slogans which have been likened to those of similar phrases during the 1930s.
A spokesperson for the BVB told dpa over the weekend regarding the sticker: “In our view, this is an unlawful attempt to establish a link between BVB and a political stance and voting behaviour by the AfD Dortmund district association, suggesting that a BVB football fan would or must simultaneously vote for the AfD. We do not want to allow this impression, and it contradicts the values of Borussia Dortmund.”
