Borussia Dortmund star tipped for the Captaincy this summer

Article image:Borussia Dortmund star tipped for the Captaincy this summer

After an incredibly underwhelming competitive campaign this season, it’s become clear that Borussia Dortmund is in need of a squad overhaul this summer, and a new gameplan for returning to the Bundesliga’s elite. What we’ve witnessed so far is simply unacceptable.

One player who has endured elevated scrutiny this season, is current club captain Emre Can. The German international has been inconsistent in performances, both in midfield and as a central defender, and the prospect of a contract extension seems slim. Should Emre Can stay next season, retaining the captaincy isn’t guaranteed. Would it make sense to keep playing a captain who the club knows will leave the next summer for free? We've already adressed this very topic:

According to Ruhr Nachrichten, Borussia Dortmund are preparing to offer Nico Schlotterbeck a new contract this summer, and with it, the Captain’s Armband. Schlotterbeck, while young, has demonstrated his leadership abilities in recent seasons, with the current one highlighting why he deserves the armband. Schlotterbeck isn’t just one of Dortmund’s most consistent players, he’s also been a constant figure on the pitch after losing. Schlotti frequently head straight for the Ultras, where he endures fans berating his club, while also garnering their respect for being there, and listening.

With several key departures likely this summer, questions have been asked about which players deserve to stay, and I believe Nico Schlotterbeck deserves that, and more. Who else from this club fits the leadership profile we need right now? And if Schlotterbeck stays after this season, and guides the club back into Europe, then he fully deserves the armband too.
