Wolfsburg hosted Borussia Dortmund at Volkswagen Arena on Saturday and the visitors walk away with all three points after a 3-1 win.
Scorers: Weghorst 2′; Can 35′ (P), Malen 55′, Haaland 80′
As a top-tier clash, both Wolfsburg and Borussia Dortmund had their eyes on holding on to all three points after the final whistle.
An alert Wout Weghorst would thus have the hosts up 1-0 roughly 90 seconds into the game after Wolfsburg caught the visitors flat-footed.
Down early, Dortmund lunged forward at the other end but it wasn’t until Maxence Lacroix took down Marco Reus in the box that Emre Can’s penalty made things all square again.
Coming out after the break, the visitors attempted to turn things around quickly.
Nico Schulz saw a volley hit off the post just minutes after the restart before Donyell Malen (who was key to Dortmund’s pressure in the first half) made things 2-1 with a curling effort from outside the box.
And while Wolfsburg saw a handful chances from Dodi Lukebakio, John Brooks and others, they failed to get themselves back into the game.
Instead, Erling Haaland added a third for the visitors after coming off the bench in his return to action.
Dortmund sit second in the table, one point behind Bayern Munich with Der Klassiker next week. Wolfsburg, meanwhile, are seventh.
