Borussia Dortmund have confirmed the arrival of Abdou Diallo from Mainz.
The France u21 international is the second most expensive transfer in Dortmund history as he joins for a fee that could rise to €30m.
Diallo signed for Mainz from Monaco last summer and enjoyed an impressive debut season in the Bundesliga.
In a statement on the club’s official website, Dortmund describe Diallo as their top transfer target to improve the defence this summer.
“He’s a modern, strong and very intelligent centre-back,” said sporting director Michael Zorc.
“He can also play fullback or be used as a defensive midfielder. The combination of great potential and versatility made Abdou very interesting to us.”
Diallo will replace Sokratis Papastathopoulos, who is expected to join Arsenal within the next week.
The defender is Dortmund’s fourth signing of the summer following the arrivals of Marwin Hitz (FC Augsburg), Marius Wolf (Eintracht Frankfurt), and Thomas Delaney (Werder Bremen).
