BILD report that Borussia Dortmund’s Sebastian Kehl managed to convince Marcel Sabitzer to forego €2.5m of his salary to join the club, with the Austrian previously earning a reported €10m at Bayern Munich.
Dortmund confirmed the arrival of Sabitzer from Bayern on Monday for a reported fee between €15m and €20m. The 29-year-old has signed a four-year contract that pens him to BVB until 2027.
Following the departure of Jude Bellingham to Real Madrid, the signing of Sabitzer is a significant transfer coup for the club with Dortmund also adding Wolfsburg’s Felix Nmecha to the squad to plug the gap left by the Englishman.
“Marcel is an experienced player who has been playing at the top international level for years,” said Sebastian Kehl. “He fits the profile that we were looking for exactly: a central midfielder who will strengthen us both defensively and offensively as a box-to-box player. Marcel is physically strong and also carries an immense goal threat.
“We’re convinced that he will also become an important pillar of our team thanks to his personality and will help us to be even more effective, especially in hard-fought matches.”
Sabitzer made the switch to Bayern Munich alongside Julian Nagelsmann in 2021 but unable to assert himself, played just 54 games across all competitions before spending the last six months on loan at Manchester United, playing under Erik ten Hag.
The Austrian international was originally set on a move to England or Italy, but Dortmund remained persistent on their efforts to sign the 29-year-old Austrian midfielder. He becomes Dortmund’s third signing this summer after Ramy Bensebaini and Nmecha.
