Kehl joined Dortmund as a player almost 20 years ago and retired in 2015 before re-joining the club to work alongside Zorc in 2018.

“The work between Sebastian Kehl and myself was full of trust from day one,” Zorc said. “Sebastian gradually got involved in all the relevant topics of a sporting director. I really appreciate his work.

“The fact that the management have decided to make him my successor in the summer of 2022 is a logical decision.”

Kehl said:

“I have felt very closely connected to this great club for almost twenty years now and I am proud to have the opportunity to shape the sporting side of Borussia Dortmund in a position with responsibility from 2022.

“As sporting director, creating the conditions for BVB to continue to be successful in the future is, for me, an obligation.

“I would like to thank those responsible — especially Hans-Joachim Watzke and Michael Zorc — for their trust. For now, though, I am looking forward to working with Michael on our goals for the present.”
