Borussia Dortmund went into the final Bundesliga game of the season needing to defeat Mainz 05 to secure their first title in 11 years.
Bayern Munich were playing Koln and hoping for the worst in the BVB game to help them claim top spot once again.
Dortmund struggled with the early pressure and did not have answers for Mainz’s deep block.
Mainz took the lead in the 15th minute, with centre-back Andreas Hanche-Olsen angling in a header beyond Gregor Kobel.
The Switzerland international goalkeeper was one of the main reasons Dortmund topped the league but he struggled to deal with high-pressure moments.
Nine minutes later, he allowed a header from Karim Onisiwo to go past him despite getting a good hand to the effort.
Dortmund were left to rue a glorious chance they missed moments earlier. Raphael Guerreiro went down in the box, and after the referee consulted the monitor, he gave the penalty.
However, Finn Dahmen got a hand to Sebastien Haller’s penalty kick to keep his side in it.
With the scores at 2-0, Marco Reus replaced Karim Adeyemi. BVB coach Edin Terzic then brought on Youssoufa Moukoko at the break.
Bayern Munich had taken the lead over Koln through a magnificent Kingsley Coman effort.
BVB pushed for a response and got it through Raphael Guerreiro in the 69th minute. Substitute Giovanni Reyna set up the Portuguese international to fire in off the post.
Around the same time, Koln’s Dejan Ljubicic equalised against Bayern to give BVB some hope as they pushed on.
BVB had the ball in the net in the final moments, but the referee ruled it out for offside.
Niklas Sule then scored a terrific volley to equalise, but it was not enough as Bayern had taken the lead through Jamal Musiala.
The Bavarians held on and pipped Dortmund to their 11th consecutive Bundesliga title.
Dortmund held their heads in their hands after bottling the chance of capturing the title despite heading into the game as massive favourites.
