Following FSG’s retreat from the negotiations for a potential takeover, FC Girondins de Bordeaux have no hopes of staying in Ligue 2 following their administrative relegation. The club has now decided to abandon its professional status, reveals Sud Ouest. All professional players from the Marines et Blanc will be released from their contracts, and the famous academy is set to be closed.

After weeks of hopes, FSG has definitely pulled out of the talks over a potential takeover, resulting in Bordeaux’s resilience to accept DNCG’s relegation from Ligue 2 to the third tier. Les Maritimes have been left without any solution to find the financial backup to remain in professional football, and things could go from bad to worse, as their budget to compete in the Championnat National is yet to be approved. While the club’s audition was set for August 1st, Bordeaux didn’t wait to take a major decision for their future.

According to a report by Sud Ouest, Bordeaux have communicated to the French Football Federation that they will abandon their professional status, acquired back in 1937, before even knowing in which division they would be admitted. In the unexpected scenario where the club would have been relegated to the third tier, clubs can retain their professional status for a two-year period. As a result, all of Bordeaux’s professional players and the 70 members of the academy will be released from their current contracts, a way to offload the Maritimes’ salary cap.
