Bordeaux offer extension to Josh Maja amid interest from Ligue 1 and abroad | OneFootball

Although they will have missed out on promotion on the final day in bizarre circumstances, Bordeaux’s season will have nevertheless seen several bright spots, with the club having avoided the worst after nearly dropping out of professional football entirely for administrative reasons last summer.

One of those has been the emergence of Josh Maja, with the former Sunderland forward enjoying a career-best campaign with 16 goals in the French second-tier.

The Nigerian international’s contract had included an automatic renewal clause if the team were to secure promotion at the first time of asking – instead, Les Girondins have finished in third place – despite occupying second for much of the spring.

Bordeaux nevertheless want to keep Maja on for next season, and according to L’Équipe a renewal offer has been put forward to the 24-year-old, consisting of one season plus an option for a further year. The club, though, are aware that keeping him on board will be difficult, and the forward, whose contract expires in two weeks, has attracted interest from clubs both in Ligue 1 and abroad.
