After five minutes of play at the Orange Vélodrome, Kalu, 23, suddenly collapsed, giving his team-mates a big scare as they waved their hands and asked the medical teams to intervene urgently. After a few moments of treatment, the Nigerian got up and even kept playing for a few minutes before being replaced a few minutes later, head down, by Rémi Oudin. "None of the additional examinations carried out on Tuesday revealed any cardiac anomaly," said the club in statement on Sunday evening. "It was a fainting spell, which is is reassuring news for Samuel Kalu, who is expected to play in Sunday's match against Angers."

In June 2019, Kalu collapsed due to dehydration while training with his team in the Egyptian heat during the African Cup of Nations and coach Vladimir Petkovic made it clear that he will be taking no risks with the health of any of his players. "With the medical service, we preferred to replace him so as not to take any risks," explained Petkovic after the match. "In these cases, football takes a back seat."
