Yesterday Amiens had a bounce game against third-tier side US Boulogne CO. Boulogne are expected to challenge for promotion this term, and they came with a full squad to face an Amiens side which is still coming to terms after an unfair demotion by the LFP after the season was stopped due to COVID- 19.
Amiens lost 0-2 with trialists like Calvin Miller taking the field for a team still trying to get in terms with life in Ligue 2. Bongani Zungu did not take part in this match at all and was a spectator at Touquet (summer training facility of Amiens).
Having spoken with club sources at Amiens during their legal battle with LFP, I wanted to get the news about what the status of Bongani Zungu’s transfer to Rangers is at the moment, cutting through all the noise.
While Scotsman had an article earlier this month that a deal is close, it did not really reveal anything. My talk with my source started with how Calvin Miller could potentially be a fit for Amiens, and from there it pivoted towards Zungu and his potential move to Rangers.
”Negotiations between the two clubs are still in progress. It’s not just Rangers though. However, yes, there is a concrete offer on the table from Rangers.
”The problem is they are offering a fee which has too many variable aspects. The upfront fee is lesser than what we want unfortunately. Negotiations are going on strong. Our price is set, and they know what we want. As of this moment, we have not accepted an offer for Zungu.”
The price set by Amiens is said to be €4.5m. When asked about his prediction about the transfer, he said he expects it to be done soon, ”Zungu will be leaving Amiens, that’s for sure. He has been a professional but has let the club knows he wants a move to Rangers. It’s just a case of us getting the price we want, which I hope will be reached soon.”
This view that Zungu is set on leaving was corroborated by another club source, ”He is mentally at Rangers already. He feels excited about joining up with Gerrard. He is not going to be forcing a move away as he is hopeful that an agreement will be struck soon.”
While there have been a lot of rumours that Zungu is an injury-prone player, the fact is he had been unlucky. You can read this piece of exclusive reporting I did on Patreon on his time at Amiens last month here. A big game player and he should fit in well under Gerrard.
