Chelsea Women’s manager Sonia Bompastor has condemned the homophobic abuse of Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis following the announcement that the couple are having a baby.
Blues striker Kerr, who remains sidelined with an ACL injury, took to social media to reveal her and Mewis were expecting a baby but Chelsea released a statement soon after condemning the “unacceptable and hateful homophobic comments” made in response to the post.
And Bompastor expressed her support for both Kerr and Mewis, who plays as a midfielder for West Ham.
“I just want to support Sam, fully support her,” Bompastor said.
“These comments are unacceptable, especially in our world in 2024.
“It’s crazy to understand how people can react like this. We’re so happy for Sam.
“I want to give all my support to Sam and Kristie and tell them that we are really proud. It’s great news.
“As a woman, having the opportunity to become a mum is the best news you can have in your life. I’m so happy for them. I can’t wait to welcome this little baby to our family.”
