Sitting just two points off the top of the League One table with three games in hand, Bolton Wanderers have certainly followed up on their strong 2022-23 season and are looking to better it with promotion later this year.
The Trotters have been a force to be reckoned with under manager Ian Evatt, losing just five matches all season and they have conceded the least amount of goals - 24 - in the entire division.
Wanderers however could need an added boost to their squad to get them over the line this time around, having faltered in the play-offs last season at the semi-final stage when losing out over two legs to Barnsley.
With just over two weeks remaining of the January transfer window, let's take a look at the latest speculation coming out of the University of Bolton Stadium.
Despite having plenty of midfield options as it is, Bolton have been linked with adding to their engine room once more this month.
Aaron Morley, Kyle Dempsey, Josh Sheehan, George Thomason and Brentford loanee Paris Maghoma represent a really strong hand for Evatt to choose from, but it has not stopped them being touted with being in the running for Man United starlet Dan Gore.
According to the Daily Mail's Transfer Confidential column, Wanderers are one of four teams from League One who have expressed an interest in loaning in the 19-year-old for the remainder of the season, with Blackpool, Fleetwood Town and Shrewsbury all also in the running.
Gore has appeared twice for United in 2023-24 after playing a number of times in pre-season, with his Premier League debut coming in the form of a cameo against Aston Villa on Boxing Day last month.
However, United are set to see his short-term future being at another club to develop, and just like they did with Shola Shoretire last year, they could opt to send him to a fellow Greater Manchester club in the form of Bolton.
It is not just Gore that Bolton are set to be battling their divisional rivals for, as the Lancashire Telegraph report that they are one of three teams that have expressed a dire to take Niall Ennis on loan for the rest of the season from Blackburn Rovers.
The 24-year-old hasn't made much of an impact at Ewood Park at all since his move from Plymouth Argyle in the summer - with the Pilgrims in their promotion-winning 2022-23 season from League One he netted 12 times but he is yet to find the back of the net for Jon Dahl Tomasson's side.
Ennis has started just three times out of his 11 league appearances for Rovers, with his only goal coming in an EFL Cup clash with Walsall - as well as Bolton, both Barnsley and Blackpool are interested in the ex-Wolves attacker and it remains to be seen if Blackburn are keen to let him depart for the remainder of the season.
Bolton have plenty of strikers on their books, with Dion Charles, Victor Adeboyejo, Cameron Jerome, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Dan Nlundulu as options to Evatt, with Carlos Mendes Gomes capable of playing there too.
Charles and Adeboyejo have scored 20 league goals between them but then it's a struggle beyond that, so Bolton are perhaps wanting Ennis to give them a bit of something extra in the 18-yard box to help them to promotion glory.
